Message from the Managing Partner

Last year was a year of consolidation for Mattos Filho. During that year, we moved forward driven by our purpose of building an integrated firm which is well-equipped to handle our clients’ most sophisticated demands and provide them with high level services. In line with this, our professionals also had the opportunity to work on some of the most significant matters reported in Brazil in 2014.

The change in our governance position is a further step in our development process

During 2014 we prepared ourselves internally and externally to meet the most challenging demands of our business clients in a thorough manner and by providing services whose hallmark is excellence. Our areas of expertise were expanded and our practices are becoming increasingly coordinated.

Throughout the year, we implemented initiatives that have strengthened our culture, broadened our service capacity and fostered our multidisciplinary coordination. While we value the strength of our collective work and the search for solutions that deliver benchmark results to our clients, we have maintained our ability to nurture and develop individual talents.

These changes, however, do not end when the year does. They only reflect a portion of our history. Even though the quality of the services we provide is unparalleled in the market for legal services in Brazil, we continue to focus firmly on maintaining our competitive edge: a firm in continuous evolution, whose business DNA includes initiative, innovation and creativity.

Our firm reported another year of record-breaking revenues of R$357,5 million, which is a result of the high caliber of our professionals. As of December 2014, Mattos Filho employed 292 attorneys, 107 law students and trainees totalling 787 employees. Last year, 8 new partners joined the firm; 6 of them were promoted from among our own associates. In the last 5 years, a total of 38 new partners joined the firm.

We noted several areas of strong growth in 2014, including Infrastructure, Litigation and Arbitration, Information Technology, Labor, Antitrust, Real Estate and Forestry Investments. Our strength, representativeness and growth continued in our most traditional practices: Corporate, Tax and Capital Markets.

Professional development is another major feature of our corporate culture. In 2014, we invested more than R$1 million in professional training. Such investments underpin innovation, entrepreneurship and the continued integration of our professionals.

Following our previous years’ achievements, in 2014 we remained one of the most recognized and most awarded law firms in Brazil. We were elected Top Latin American Law Firm for the third consecutive year by Latin American Corporate Counsel Association (LACCA).

Despite the difficult economic and political outlook for Brazil in 2015, we believe that we will continue to grow. We are ready to identify new opportunities and use them accordingly, and we will remain a reliable partner for our clients.

In April 2015, I stepped down as our managing partner, and José Eduardo Carneiro Queiroz was elected for this position for a three-year term. José Eduardo joined the firm 20 years ago as a law student and he has an in-depth knowledge of our culture, values and beliefs. He practices in the areas of M&A, Capital Markets and Banking and was a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.

The change in our governance position is a further step in our development process. We consider this transition as a continuation of our work and our commitment to building a firm that will thrive for many years in the Brazilian legal market and which is capable of providing opportunities for our future generation of professionals.
